Explore Anchorage

Must-See Spots During Your Visit!

Visiting Anchorage in late September offers a unique experience as the fall colors are at their peak, and the weather begins to cool down. Here are five must-see things to do in Anchorage during this time of year:

Northern Lights Viewing

Late September is the start of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) season in Alaska. Anchorage is a great base for seeing the Aurora, especially if you venture a bit outside the city to get away from light pollution. You can head to areas like Kincaid Park, Flat Top Mountain, or even the scenic drive out toward the Matanuska Valley for a chance to see the mesmerizing light displays in the night sky.

Hiking in Kincaid Park

With the fall colors at their peak, Kincaid Park offers some of the best hiking opportunities during late September. The vibrant autumn foliage combined with sweeping views of Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains makes this a picturesque location for a fall hike. The cooler weather is perfect for outdoor activities, and you'll likely encounter fewer crowds compared to summer.

Wildlife Viewing at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Late September is an excellent time to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center because many animals are preparing for winter and are active during the cooler temperatures. You may see moose, bison, brown bears, and other Alaskan wildlife as they forage and prepare for hibernation or migration.

Visit the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center

As the weather cools down, spending time indoors can be a great way to enjoy the rich culture and history of Alaska. The Anchorage Museum is home to fascinating exhibits on Alaskan history, indigenous cultures, and the natural world. There's also the Imaginarium Discovery Center for hands-on activities and a planetarium where you can learn more about the science of the Northern Lights.

Drive the Scenic Seward Highway

If you have a day or two to spare, take a scenic drive down the Seward Highway, which is just south of Anchorage. In late September, the fall colors make this route especially beautiful. The highway offers breathtaking views of the coastline, Turnagain Arm, and the towering Chugach Mountains. Stop at scenic overlooks, or consider taking short hikes to enjoy the fall foliage. You might also catch a glimpse of beluga whales in Turnagain Arm as they migrate.
